Pancake Supper

                Gather your family and friends to enjoy the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Tuesday, March 5, 5-7 p.m., at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church Hayesville.

                The menu features real, from-scratch pancakes made with fresh eggs, buttermilk, butter, and special flour. There will also be local Bitter Creek extra lean handmade sausage, warm maple syrup, apple sauce, orange juice, coffee and tea. Gluten free pancakes on request. The price is $6.00 for ages 12 and older, $3.00 for 11 and younger. The event is sponsored by the young men of the Order of Saint George, and all proceeds will go to children's and youth ministries.

                The tradition of eating pancakes on the day before Lent begins started in the Middle Ages and is still observed throughout the Christian world. Pancakes were cooked in order to clear the larder of milk, fat, and meat on the day before Ash Wednesday, when fasting began.

Christmas Season at Good Shepherd

                Good Shepherd Episcopal Church invites you to enter with us into the holy space of Christmas through a variety of events, beginning with a Blue Christmas Service on Friday December 21st. We chose that darkest day of the year to acknowledge that Christmas is not always a joyful occasion for everyone. The service starts at 11a.m. on the 21st in a quiet liturgy that recognizes that in this season we grieve the absence of loved ones.  We sorrow over failing health.  We weep for what has been and for what might have been.  And so we gather to hear and remember God’s message of hope and to be fed by the Lord’s supper that the love and light of God may scatter the darkness before us.  Following the service we will be fed by a simple lunch to which all are welcome.

                On Saturday December 22 at 6:30 p.m. the community is invited to a Christmas Concert and Carol Sing with the Chancel Choir, under the direction of Keith Christensen. Bring a can of food or dry goods for Matt’s Ministry as your price of admission. Cookies and hot beverages will be shared at intermission followed by carol singing accompanied by pianist Carol Smucker. Leave for home with carols dancing in your head and a bag of cookies in your hand!

                Continue the celebration of Christmas with us through three Christmas worship services. On Christmas Eve, join us for the 4 p.m. Christmas Eve family-friendly service of Holy Eucharist, or come at 11 p.m. for the beautiful midnight Eucharist with candles, music and choir. On Christmas morning, celebrate Jesus’ birth with Holy Eucharist at 10 a.m.

2018 Bethel-Guidry College Scholarship Golf Tournament Now Seeking Entries, Sponsors, Volunteers

The Ridges Country Club in Hayesville is again the site for the Bethel-Guidry Golf Tournament held annually  for the purpose of funding colleges scholarship for qualified high school seniors in Clay and Towns Counties.  On Saturday, September 29, at 7:00 A.M. the golfers will tee off with a shotgun start,  hoping to be a prize winner in the various contests of the tournament.  All area golfers are welcome to play, either individually or as part of a team.  The entry fee is $100 and includes a Golfer Continental Breakfast, range balls, gift bags and a  celebratory luncheon.  A cash bar will be available as well. Awards and a Silent Auction will conclude the luncheon.  Additional luncheon tickets may be purchased for $30.

A number of area students have benefited from this annual event, receiving financial aid for their college choice, and we hope this year’s event will raise enough funding to foster several more deserving scholars.  Event Co-Chairmen Sanford Freeman and Jose Arias are urging individuals, businesses or other community groups to step forward as Golf Tournament Sponsors.  The Sponsor levels range from $100-$500 with exciting benefits at each level.  Sponsors can choose to support tournament contests such as the Hole in One, Best Ball or others, or to underwrite the Refreshment Cart or Golfer Continental Breakfast. Volunteers for the tournament are also needed as well as unique and valued items for the Silent Auction. 

The Golf Tournament is named for Deacon Turner Guidry and his wife Georgia Bethel, both of whom lovingly served the youth of our area as teachers and mentors for many decades. They continue to do so today.  Good Shepherd Episcopal Church initiated the Golf Tournament in their name and set up the foundation to help deserving students attend college or trade school.

Celebrating our Animals

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Hayesville invites you and your pet friends to participate in two upcoming events. On Saturday, September 22nd, the Seventh Annual Pet Celebration takes place on the Hayesville Town Square from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with fun, food, and information about your pets. Good Shepherd Episcopal Church will once again have a booth offering a welcome of doggie treats and water for thirsty pups.

Veterinarian and Good Shepherd member Dr. Dwain E. Zagrocki, or “Dr. Z,” will also be at the booth to assist pet owners to look in their dog’s ears, listen to their heartbeat, or even see your pet’s “insides” on his portable ultrasound unit. The booth is coordinated by parishioner Carole Webber, whose therapy dogs regularly bring joy to local nursing homes and shut-ins.

On Saturday, October 6th at 10:00 a.m., Good Shepherd invites everyone and their pets to the church itself, located at 495 Herbert Hills Drive east of Hayesville. Fr. George Choyce will minister to pet companions and their humans with the annual Feast of St. Francis “Blessing of the Animals.” This event is open to all people and all kinds of animals.
